Thandi Nxumalo started her schooling in Tsetswana, her original language. When the area she lived in was given to the Pedis, she started learning this language. She has Ndebele heritage and married into the Zulu culture. Thandi has sons and one daughter who now lives in Norway. Although officially retired, Thandi still works with the museums in her hometown of Eshowe, KwaZulu-Natal.
