About

A: The Wizard of Oz! Gay men in the 1940s felt a connection to Judy Garland’s “Dorothy,” and would use the term as code phrase to meet other gay men.

Today, the song “Somewhere Over The Rainbow” is still deemed a classic LGBT anthem, as is sang by Gay Mens Choruses both here in the UK, and in the US.

Audio: Edinburgh Gay Mens Chorus singing “Somewhere Over The Rainbow” from The Wizard of Oz as they march down the Royal Mile during the Pride Edinburgh. Edited with Judy Garland’s performance in 1939’s “The Wizard of Oz”
