This eye-catching case, in immaculate condition, is a grooming kit dating from the 19th century. Its rather coffin like shape resembles a carrying case for eye glasses. Made from gold coloured gilded metal it is decorated with fine amber coloured glass. The interior reveals seven slots of differing profiles designed to accommodate manicure and grooming accessories, such as a small scissors, tweezers, nail file, etc.,
The case has a decorated curved lid which hinges open via a spring catch. The interior of the lid is attractively polished. The decorative gilded metal frame defines its shape and structure. The amber glass decoration set into the frame is in the shape of 14 individual flat fish. When the case catches the light, delicate carvings on the base metal, reveal themselves as intricate fish scales, reflected through the amber glass. Do these perhaps represent Gold Fish?
The dimensions of the case are: H 15.5 x W 5 x D 2.5 cms
Its origins are unknown but as it dates from the 19th century it is reminiscent of the Art Nouveau Period (1890 – 1910)
The distinguishing ornamental characteristic of Art Nouveau is its undulating asymmetrical line, often taking the form of flower stalks and buds, vine tendrils, insect wings and other delicate sinuous natural objects.
In the United States the Tiffany Style, famous for the Tiffany Lamp is synonymous with the Art Nouveau Period. While in Britain it is sometimes referred to as the Glasgow Style because of the famed Scottish Architect and Designer Rennie Mackintosh.
