Emma was Jane Austen's fourth book, published in December 1815, and the last to be published in her lifetime. Following the life of a wealthy heiress, the story of Emma is very different from the rest of her works. Emma's character is described as clever, rich, and independent, as her father's wealth allows her to live the life she desires. The book's hero is one of Emma's closest companions, Mr. Knightly, who she grew up with and often indulged Emma in silly arguing and banter. While Emma is Jane Austen's only character with wealth of her own, it still demonstrates Jane's own desire for independence and a longing for the ability to choose a husband out of love instead of duty. The love declaration in Emma emphasizes the friendship and love between both characters, highlighting a principle that is present within almost all of Jane Austen's work.
