About

Northanger Abbey was one of two novels published after Jane Austen's death in 1817, but it was most likely written between 1798 and 1799. Austen was unable to get the novel published during her lifetime, regardless of her multiple attempts. The novel was only published after her brother pleaded with Austen's publisher to let it be released as the first two volumes of Persuasion. While still following the familiar narrative of her other works, Northanger Abbey is unique as it serves as a satirical retelling of many of the gothic stories popular during the period it was written. However, as apparent in the love declaration added by director Joe Jones, there is still a presence of the clever and witty love stories that Jane Austen is so well-known for.
