About

Sense and Sensibility was Jane Austen's first book, published in 1811 with the help of her older brother. The story follows two sisters, Elinor and Marianne, as they navigate life with their mother and younger sister after their father's death left them in squalor. Interestingly enough, the book closely follows the trajectory of Jane Austen's own life. In 1805, after her father's death, Jane, her mother, and her sister were forced to move from their home with minimal allowance after their father's estate was left to her eldest brother. Furthermore, Marianne's love story closely resembles that of her older sister, Cassandra, who was also engaged to a regiment Chaplin around twenty years her senior. However, unlike Marianne, Cassandra did not get her happy ending as her fiance died in the West Indies during a tour. After his death, Cassandra vowed never to engage in courtship again and remained single for the rest of her life.
