James I had started building Linlithgow Castle in 1424. It had many grand areas including a Great Hall, royal apartments, a three-tiered courtyard fountain, and a north quarter. The north quarter, which contained the Queen’s apartment, was completely destroyed by a fire in 1746 after having been damaged in 1607 and rebuilt in 1620. The castle was built on a hill above an inland loch, but this was not the first time the land had been occupied, there have been people there since two thousand years ago and royals since 1124.
