About

What has now been turned into a twentieth century palace with a lift, modernized kitchen, electric lighting, and central heating, the Palace of Holyrood was once partly in ruins. There are still some ruins on the grounds of what was once the Augustinian Abbey which was ordered by King David I of Scotland. After Scotland and England’s union in 1707 the palace started to ruin so when Bonnie Prince Charlie moved to the palace he chose to live in the Duke’s apartments rather than the King’s, the abbey church continued to be neglected and then finally the roof collapsed.
