About

One of the only five castles that held out against the English, Lochleven is now in ruins. The only part of the castle that still stands is the tower house, built in the thirteenth century it is one of the oldest ones to be built. The original entrance which is now closed was built 5m above ground level, most likely because they were worried about flooding. Inside the building on the bottom two floors are the kitchen and service areas, the lord’s hall was on the second floor, and the floor above the hall was used as Mary Queen of Scots’ prison.
