About

Sockeye salmon begin their lives in freshwater, spend their adulthoods in the ocean, and journey home to their birthplace to spawn. “Sockeye” comes from the word suk-kegh (sϴə̀qəỳ), its name in Halkomelem, which means “red fish.”

Listen to an interview excerpt about Sockeye Salmon with Dr. Scott Hinch, Professor, Department of Forest and Conservation Sciences, University of British Columbia. Interviewed by Kai Geddes and Elizabeth Edgerton.
