This object looks like an oversized donut or a thick bagel, doesn’t it? But, it’s not food. It’s a lump of dried clay with a hole in the middle that was used as a hanging weight. Did you notice any in the house reconstruction? Several are displayed on the upper floor, as part of the upright loom. Our reconstruction is based upon ancient designs, which included a simple wooden frame for weaving cloth by hand. These weights kept the vertical (warp) yarns taut on the frame, preventing tangling, and facilitating the weaver’s work. Loom weights came in different sizes: the thicker the yarn, the heavier the loom weight… and the coarser the resulting cloth. Finer cloth required finer yarn and lighter loom weights. This type of weight was homemade, not bought in a market or traded from afar. Clay was available everywhere and weavers could easily replace broken or worn out weights by making their own new ones.
